Investigating the Unforeseen Journey to Spirit Mediumship
In the summer of 1987, I had my initial experience with the spirit world during an evening of mediumship at a spiritualist church. That night altered the course of my life. From that moment forward, I became a regular attendee of Sunday services.
My profound interest wasn’t born out of a sudden religious passion, but rather a desire to explore the messages from the spirit world that were a consistent part of the service.
The concept of connecting with the spirit realm fascinated me, and I found as much joy in hearing messages meant for others as I did in receiving my own.
One evening, I had an unexpected call from a new friend I met at the church. She facilitated the weekly meditation and healing sessions. She told me that my name had appeared on the list for an upcoming mediumship class.
I was perplexed. I hadn’t registered for anything! She then chuckled and revealed that she had signed me up herself! She felt that, having gotten to know me through her programs, I might enjoy the experience.
In truth, I had also been attending meditation and healing sessions mainly to receive more messages from the spirit. Each session ended with a medium conveying messages until closing time, and I cherished those moments.
I never even considered that regular individuals like myself could learn to become mediums. I had no prior experience or education. Until my initial visit to that Spiritualist church, I was unaware that such places existed!
Our experiences with mediumship have revealed to us that reaching out to spirit loved ones can offer tremendous resolutions, closure, and particularly, healing ~ Rev. Simeon Stefanidakis
My friend informed me that one of the church’s pastors would be calling me for a brief interview. Sure enough, a few days later, the reverend contacted me. By the end of the conversation, I had been pleasantly accepted into the introductory class, which was led by another church official. Thankfully, I had previously heard him speak during services, which made me feel more comfortable; that’s why I agreed to participate.
Within a few weeks, I was advanced from the beginner group to the intermediate class due to my rapid progress, which surprised me more than anyone else!
Before long, I was delivering group messages at Sunday services, as well as during my friends’ meditation and healing events. This meant that I was publicly practicing mediumship at least three times a month. I felt incredibly fortunate to have such an impactful initiation and numerous opportunities to hone my mediumship in a nurturing environment.
Before I knew it, other spiritualist churches started reaching out to me, and ultimately, I was speaking regularly at five different churches across various cities.
While it wasn’t mandatory, I opted to emulate my mentor and ensure that everyone left having heard from spirit. Even if time allowed for just one message per person, I made it a point to fulfill that, remembering how much those messages had meant to me early on.
One of the most challenging tests of my mediumship took place during a meditation circle where I stood at the center, conveying messages to forty-four individuals in just forty-five minutes. Since that time, I have become recognized for my ability to connect succinctly with spirit, and I express daily gratitude to my guides for their support and guidance.
The following year, I received an invitation to join the advanced class, where I began participating in rescue sessions… yet another facet of mediumship I never anticipated exploring! However, as spirit frequently illustrates, our journey unfolds precisely as intended, despite our limited human plans.
For me, the interaction between the two worlds feels natural, providing humanity with a portal to gain knowledge regarding our eternal existence and our journey of life, moving through the psychical into the spiritual realms of light ~ Stephen Wakeling
Insights Gained About Mediumship
Follow Your Interests: My path began with a single evening of curiosity. If something piques your interest, whether it’s a service, class, or circle, trust that feeling. Spirit often reaches out first through our intuition.
No Need for “Religious” Beliefs: You can pursue spiritual mediumship without adhering to conventional religious beliefs. Spiritual connections transcend doctrines and meet you where you are.
Mediumship Can Be Developed by Anyone: I had no background or experience at the outset. Mediumship isn’t exclusive to the select few; it can be nurtured with intention, practice, and an open heart.
Participate in Circles to Receive and Learn: Meditation circles and healing evenings offer transformative experiences. Even if your primary aim is to receive messages, you begin to learn the language of spirit.
Be Receptive to Others’ Guidance: Sometimes others recognize your potential before you do. Trust mentors or friends who kindly push you forward; they may be spirit messengers in disguise.
Engage in Deep Listening: Paying attention to the messages delivered to others is as crucial as receiving your own. It helps attune your awareness to how spirit communicates across diverse lives and personalities.
Be Open to Moving Forward: Don’t hesitate to take initiative when offered. Advancements may occur sooner than expected, but if you are prepared, spirit will clear your way.
Give Freely and Fully: I always ensured that every individual in the room received a message, regardless of time limitations. Spirit values devotion, and generosity strengthens your connection.
Spirit Works Through You, Not Because of You: Strong messages and swift connections arise from collaboration with spirit guides. Keep your ego in check and express daily gratitude for their presence.
Expect Your Journey to Expand in Unforeseen Ways: Rescue sessions, public speaking, and cross-city services may not have been on your radar, but say yes when spirit reveals a new opportunity. Growth often lies just beyond your comfort zone.
Ethical Principles & Inner Discipline
There are specific ethical, psychological, and spiritual responsibilities associated with mediumship that aspiring mediums should be aware of, as thoughtfully discussed by Eileen J. Garrett in The Ethics of Mediumship.
Cultivate Inner Calm Without Attachment: Mediumistic receptivity starts with a peaceful mind, free from distractions or personal agendas. Attempting to force connections often hampers true communion with spirit.
Stay Detached Yet Kind: While it’s natural to empathize with those seeking messages, a medium should remain emotionally stable and avoid being overwhelmed by the sitter’s grief or expectations.
Do Not Force Anything: Any effort to “perform” or provide validation can taint the purity of the connection. Allow spirit to communicate in its own timing and manner.
Avoid “Doctrinal Compliance”: Mediums must steer clear of unconsciously echoing the beliefs or desires of others. Stay neutral and permit genuine spiritual communication to occur.
Refrain from Assuming the Role of a “High Priestess.” Mediumship should never transform into a cult of personality. Prevent fostering dependence or creating a spiritual hierarchy. Your purpose is to serve, not to lead.
Recognize the Emotional Vulnerability of Sitters: Those in mourning are particularly open and sensitive. Approach each interaction with tenderness and responsibility, understanding that even simple messages can have a significant impact.
Avoid Commercial Pressures: Financial or performance expectations can contaminate a session. Mediumship is sacred and should never devolve into a transactional process or driven by monetary motives.
Your Journey Will Expand in Unexpected Ways: Rescue sessions, public speaking, and intercity services may not have been on your radar, but say yes when spirit opens a new opportunity. Growth rests just beyond your comfort zone.
Honor the Balance of Passivity and Strength: Mediumship requires a unique balance: yielding to spirit while maintaining strong personal boundaries and integrity.
Refrain from Over-Identifying with the Message: Messages do not validate your ego or worth. Stay humble and remember that you are a vessel, not the origin.
Ground Your Practice in This Life First: Communication with spirit should enhance your presence and responsibilities in this life, not replace them. Encourage sitters to fully engage in the here and now.
