During the transition, the prairie dogs undergo health and wellness evaluations, as well as any necessary veterinary care. They are also provided with abundant food. Prairie dogs are kept with their family groups. Colonies typically consist of no more than 1,000 prairie dogs, and they are moved in batches over several months.

The new burrows are established in protected areas where the prairie dogs will not face hunting or poisoning. The burrows may be restored existing ones or newly created with nest boxes and drainpipes about four feet underground.
