In January 2023, the well-respected science publication New Scientist noted that two UK water companies still resort to dowsing to validate or hone results while investigating pipe leaks, albeit without official endorsement of the technique.

It is worth mentioning that my husband, a wonderful skeptic, believes that everything must be quantifiable and scientifically validated. However, his views toward dowsing were notably challenged one day in St. Fillans, Scotland, in 1974.

My brother confidently proclaimed that he could locate a water pipe anywhere using only an inverted Y-shaped stick. Doubting that my brother-in-law was unaware of the pipe locations surrounding his residence, my husband challenged him to find a water pipe in a neighbor’s yard.

So they embarked on a search through the neighbor’s yard with a forked stick (with the neighbor’s consent, naturally), and astonishingly, the wood twisted toward the ground on its own. To everyone’s astonishment, my brother located the neighbor’s water pipe in record time! Even my skeptical husband had to concede that he witnessed the stick move independently, attributing it to “one of those unexplainable occurrences.”

But what or who accounts for this phenomenon? Various theories exist regarding dowsing’s function, ranging from mystical interpretations to psychological and scientific hypotheses.

One widely held idea is that dowsing is a psychological occurrence stemming from the subconscious. This theory posits that the dowser may possess subconscious awareness of where the water or object lies, perhaps by interpreting subtle environmental signals, previous experiences, or intuition. The Ouija board might appear as a harmless board game or an entertaining psychic instrument for spiritual exploration. Yet, there are substantial reasons to approach this supposed “game” with considerable caution, if not avoid it altogether.

In my experience as a spiritual counselor, I’ve assisted several clients over the years who engaged with the Ouija board and other questionable forms of spirit communication, including necromancy. Although interacting with the spirit world can provide significant opportunities for healing, growth, and connection, it is not something to be taken lightly.

Enhancing your intuition and spiritual connection is a beautiful and uplifting journey. It enables you to become more aware of the unseen and to reach out to your departed loved ones, ancestors, spirit guides, and angels. However, this form of communication and interaction requires respect, reverence, and sincere intention.

Well-meaning practices such as divination, psychic readings, and mediumship are fundamentally different from opening yourself indiscriminately, without safeguards, to any and all spiritual beings and energies.

I have always been enthralled by chilling ghost tales. In fact, the more terrifying they are, the better! Since my adolescent years, I have actively sought out sensational supernatural narratives purely for the excitement they bring.

A particular tale that lingers in my thoughts is that of “Pete the Poltergeist.”

During the 1980s, while Britain faced a recession, two self-employed individuals in Cardiff successfully operated a lawnmower repair service known as Mower Services from one of their residences.

On one occasion, one of the men heard noises resembling stones being tossed at the workshop door, but found no one outside when he went to check. The stones appeared to come from thin air!

Subsequently, the men discovered that their keys had been misplaced, and a peculiar odor permeated a specific area of the workshop that had suddenly turned very cold. They even began to find money and witnessed objects hurled across the workshop floor – perplexed about the source and the cause!

Due to this inexplicable activity, they decided to close the shop one night to conduct their own séance-like experiment. They rested their hands on a table, fingers touching, and requested the spirit to throw a stone at them – and it complied! Then one of the men asked for a pen, which was tossed at them too!

What caused this? The two men simply concluded that they had a ghost in their workshop who felt “like a family member,” ultimately giving it the nickname “Pete the Poltergeist.”

The narrative includes how this same man found himself alone in the workshop late one night and began to feel quite uneasy. He kindly requested Pete not to disturb him that night as he was quite busy. Remarkably, he did not encounter any more disturbances from the poltergeist that evening.

Local police officers, shop employees, and insurance adjusters alike reported witnessing items flying or hearing unexplained sounds. Eventually, the activity lessened when Mower Services relocated to a new site, but Pete the Poltergeist allegedly followed one of the employees home and continued his playful yet unsettling behavior there.
