Fortunately, Santa Fe is very “critter-friendly” and has made significant efforts to properly relocate the prairie dogs. In 2001, the city enacted an ordinance mandating the humane relocation of prairie dogs from development sites before any lethal control measures could be applied.

The prairie dogs are humanely captured as they exit their burrows and transferred to a holding facility or a new burrow with a holding cap for gradual release. During the transition, the prairie dogs undergo health and wellness evaluations, as well as any necessary veterinary care. They are also provided with abundant food. Prairie dogs are kept with their family groups. Colonies typically consist of no more than 1,000 prairie dogs, and they are moved in batches over several months.

The new burrows are established in protected areas where the prairie dogs will not face hunting or poisoning. The burrows may be restored existing ones or newly created with nest boxes and drainpipes about four feet underground.

After the prairie dogs are released, a temporary holding structure resembling a rabbit hutch is placed over the burrow. Now that your mind and body are settled, let your spirit direct your mind. Start to visualize what your life will resemble once you’ve achieved your goal. Be specific—and enjoy this process!

For instance, if your goal is to experience improved sleep at night, picture yourself peacefully lying in bed, feeling deeply relaxed and content. Envision waking up feeling rejuvenated and full of energy. Experience deep, rested vitality in your body and renewed clarity in your mind.
