Comprehending the Fascinating Occurrence of Table Turning

FREE psychic reading at PsychicAccess.com, Click Here NOW!!!Table turning, often referred to as “table tipping” or “table tilting,” is an intriguing method of spirit communication that takes place during séances.

This practice involves individuals positioning themselves around a table, lightly resting their hands on its surface to establish a connection with spirits. The table may then move, tilt, or, in extraordinary instances, float or rotate in reply to inquiries made to the spirit realm.

The phenomenon of table turning rose to fame in the mid-1800s, a period when Spiritualism was rapidly gaining traction across Europe and North America. People were captivated by the potential of reaching out to the afterlife, making séances a popular social event.

During that era, individuals lacked the resources or easy access to mediums and channelers available today. Small circles of family and friends would convene to engage with the spirit world.

Table turning was deemed an entertaining way to amuse guests at social functions and was even classified as a parlor game. Notably, Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of President Lincoln, is said to have participated in and even organized séances in the White House.

Prominent spiritualists of the time, including the Laurie family and Nettie Colburn Maynard, reportedly joined the Lincolns during their séances. Mrs. Lincoln exhibited a profound interest in spiritualism and mediumship, especially following the deaths of her children, Edward and later Willie.

While accounts of table turning can be traced back to the second century, its surge in popularity during the 19th century is primarily linked to the renowned Fox family in Hydesville, New York. In 1848, reports of poltergeist activities led to strange knocking sounds and the movement of tables.

The applications of table tipping are diverse and rich, unveiling a magnificent world filled with potential — one where this connection with spirit benefits not just you but also those around you who may not even be present at the table ~ Teresa Lally

By the 1850s, table turning had become a widespread sensation in America, enthralling many, and in 1852, two American mediums, Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Roberts, brought the practice to England.

Within a year, the activity gained tremendous popularity nationwide, leading to fashionable events known as “tea and table turning” parties. Even Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were reported to have attended table-turning séances.

However, there was a notable backlash from religious groups, with clergymen attributing the phenomenon to demonic forces and numerous scientists dismissing it as folly or deception.

Table Turning Skepticism & Research

Michael Faraday, a British scientist renowned for his groundbreaking work in electromagnetism, electrochemistry, and parapsychology, endeavored to apply scientific principles to investigate supernatural occurrences. He performed experiments on table turning and eventually concluded that the movements were the result of the ideomotor effect — unconscious muscular actions causing participants to push the table without being aware.

Yet, Faraday’s theory didn’t elucidate all observed cases. There have been documented instances of tables tilting and even floating without any physical contact. A notable incident was recorded in 1853 in Valleyres, Switzerland, where Count Agenor de Gasparin, a French scholar and paranormal researcher, chronicled a heavy table’s remarkable movements without any direct touch. Even when bags of sand and heavy stones were placed on it, it lifted multiple times before ultimately disintegrating.

The subsequent year, Marc Thury, a physics professor at the University of Geneva and a colleague of Gasparin, conducted his own investigations. Thury reported observing a piano move seemingly on its own, attributing the occurrence to psychokinetic forces from a young boy nearby, who lacked the strength or opportunity to move the piano himself.

In 1869, the London Dialectical Society formed several committees consisting of scientists, clergymen, and laypeople to examine spiritualist phenomena like table turning and spirit communication. Sub-Committee No. 1 specifically documented various instances of table movements and levitation occurring without any physical contact. Some initial skeptics among committee members converted to believers after witnessing the phenomena with their own eyes.

Further evidence was recorded in the early 20th century. Mediums like Indridi Indridason from Iceland and Kathleen Goligher from Ireland were subjects of thorough scientific studies, with numerous observers reporting remarkable and unexplained table movements during their séances.

As recently as the 1970s, researchers such as Kenneth Batcheldor and Colin Brookes-Smith executed experiments demonstrating that tables could move under regulated conditions — some even soaring several feet into the air! Their findings remain a significant aspect of parapsychological research history.

Then the table commenced rising from the ground, reaching a height of about twelve to eighteen inches, remaining suspended and perfectly level. We were permitted … to enter beneath the clasped hands of the sitters into the circle and attempt to force the table down. We both found it impossible to do so ~  William Barrett

How To Conduct A Table Turning Séance

Preparation: Creating the right atmosphere is key. Arrange your table in a serene, dimly lit space devoid of distractions. Employ candlelight or soft illumination to foster a tranquil, welcoming environment. Soft music or incense may also enhance the ambiance.

Gathering: Organize a setting around a fitting table, such as a card table or small wooden table. Table turning is most effective with a small group containing at least two and no more than seven participants. Everyone should approach the session with openness, calmness, and focus. Lightly place your fingertips on the table’s surface — avoid pressing down. Keep your arms relaxed to create a gentle and connected energy flow.

In my experience, every table moves — regardless of size, yet I believe a wooden pedestal table works best. Initially, I used an ornate antique for my first table. After an extensive search and investment of time and resources, I realized that antiques were not practical for teaching table turning classes. One day, while shopping for Christmas decorations, I stumbled upon several cute little wooden octagonal pedestal tables offered at a very reasonable price — just the right dimensions for comfortable use. They work wonderfully.

Invocation: Commence with a brief grounding and protection prayer, meditation, or ritual, such as envisioning a circle of light or an energy shield, calling on spirit guides or ancestors, or surrounding yourself with a protective circle of angels. It’s crucial to acknowledge that all types of spirits may wish to communicate, so seek only the highest, most beneficial insights for everyone present. Dedicate a few minutes to silence or guided meditation to elevate the group’s energy.

Invitation: Ideally, designate one individual to speak for the group. Invite the spirit to step forward and communicate. Keep the invitation clear, respectful, and aligned with your intention. Maintain stillness, attentiveness, and patience.

Activation: Initially, you may perceive a tapping or knocking sound. With time and patience, the table may start to feel vibratory and begin to move gradually. Eventually, it might rock, tap, or lift from one side. Sometimes people find it necessary to stand to keep pace with it. It could engage in a little dance or even traverse the room — with the group closely trailing to maintain contact with the table. If needed, you can ask the table to settle down. Most spirits are eager to oblige and get to work, although some may require several requests.

It may take a few minutes or multiple sessions to stimulate spirit activity, so it’s essential to exercise patience. Sustain a high energy level and steer clear of doubt or distraction. Always prioritize the emotional and energetic safety of all participants.

Communication: Once the table’s activity has stabilized, set communication guidelines, such as, “Spirit, please tilt the table once for yes, twice for no.” Pose clear, respectful inquiries. Observe and be attuned to the table’s movement responses. Avoid coercion — table movement should emerge organically and not be forced.

You might also circulate around the table to determine with whom the spirit wishes to communicate. Occasionally, the table will instinctively move toward that person without being prompted! Once it’s ascertained who the spirit is engaging with, the dialogue can commence. The participant might inquire, “Are you my grandmother?” or even name a relative, friend, or a cherished pet, etc. It’s also valuable to jot down a few questions from each attendee prior to initiating the session.

Closing: Conclude the session by expressing gratitude to the spirit and disbanding the circle respectfully and calmly. Initially, keep sessions brief (not exceeding 20 to 30 minutes).

I’ve had many remarkable experiences with table tipping. The table can move in various ways — lifting an inch off the floor, swaying, and sometimes even going fully upright. While I’ve yet to see a tabletop fall, we’ve observed tables coming loose or developing cracks from all the paranormal activity. (Not an ideal situation for antiques!)

Occasionally, the table will gently tip into a sitter’s lap. I like to think of this as a “spirit hug.” It can evoke strong emotions. Sitters may laugh or cry, but more often, they feel grateful for having witnessed this extraordinary phenomenon.

I’ve even been fortunate enough to join a group of medium friends at a historic table that once belonged to the esteemed spiritualist Harrison D. Barrett. He was a pivotal figure in the Spiritualist community of the 1800s and served as President of the National Spiritualist Association of Churches (NSAC) in both the United States and Canada. His aim was to establish Spiritualism as a legitimate religious philosophy, merging scientific exploration with spiritual beliefs.

Exploring the Captivating Phenomenon of Table Turning

Table turning, also termed table tipping or table tilting, is a captivating phenomenon that has fascinated and mystified individuals for ages. This practice involves a table being moved or tipped without any discernible physical force acting upon it. While some dismiss it as mere trickery or deception, others regard it as a genuine paranormal event. In this discussion, we will delve into the history, theories, and possible insights surrounding this captivating phenomenon.

Historical Overview of Table Turning:

Table turning gained traction during the 19th century as part of the spiritualist movement. Spiritualism emerged as a belief system in the mid-1800s, emphasizing the notion that the living could establish communication with the spirits of the departed. Table turning became a standardized practice during séances, where individuals gathered around a table, placed their hands upon it, and endeavored to communicate with spirits.

The Phenomenon Unfolded:

During a typical table turning session, participants usually form a circle around a table, lightly resting their hands on its surface. They then pose questions or make requests to the spirits, anticipating a response. In some instances, the table may exhibit vibrations, movement, or even levitation. The motions are frequently described as gentle, but they can also be vigorous and rapid at times.

Theories and Possible Explanations:

1. Ideomotor Effect: One of the prevalent explanations for table turning is the ideomotor effect. This psychological phenomenon indicates that unintentional muscle movements can ensue without conscious awareness. When participants touch the table, subconscious desires or anticipations may trigger slight movements, giving the appearance of the table moving.

2. Group Psychology: Another theory posits that table turning arises from group psychology and suggestion. When people congregate around a shared belief in the paranormal, they may unconsciously affect one another’s actions. This collective energy can manifest as table movement.

3. Supernatural or Spiritual Explanation: Some advocates of table turning assert that the phenomenon is authentically supernatural or spiritual in nature. They believe that spirits or otherworldly beings are behind the movements. However, this argument remains speculative and subjective due to a lack of solid proof.

4. Physical Forces: Skeptics often attribute table turning to physical factors such as vibrations, uneven surfaces, or subtle air currents. These elements can cause the table to shift or tip, presenting an illusion of paranormal activity. Nonetheless, this reasoning fails to account for scenarios wherein the table moves against gravity or when numerous observers witness the event.

In Summary:

Table turning continues to intrigue and captivate individuals globally. Whether a result of psychological factors, group dynamics, or authentic paranormal activity, the phenomenon remains a topic of debate and fascination. While skeptics may regard it as mere mental trickery, others find themselves drawn to the potential for connecting with the unknown. Regardless of personal beliefs, table turning serves as a testament to the enduring mysteries that inhabit our world, awaiting exploration and understanding. Continue reading

Comprehending the Mysterious Characteristics of Poltergeist Events

FREE psychic reading at PsychicAccess.com, Click Here NOW!!!I have always been enthralled by chilling ghost tales. In fact, the more terrifying they are, the better! Since my adolescent years, I have actively sought out sensational supernatural narratives purely for the excitement they bring.

A particular tale that lingers in my thoughts is that of “Pete the Poltergeist.”

During the 1980s, while Britain faced a recession, two self-employed individuals in Cardiff successfully operated a lawnmower repair service known as Mower Services from one of their residences.

On one occasion, one of the men heard noises resembling stones being tossed at the workshop door, but found no one outside when he went to check. The stones appeared to come from thin air!

Subsequently, the men discovered that their keys had been misplaced, and a peculiar odor permeated a specific area of the workshop that had suddenly turned very cold. They even began to find money and witnessed objects hurled across the workshop floor – perplexed about the source and the cause!

Due to this inexplicable activity, they decided to close the shop one night to conduct their own séance-like experiment. They rested their hands on a table, fingers touching, and requested the spirit to throw a stone at them – and it complied! Then one of the men asked for a pen, which was tossed at them too!

What caused this? The two men simply concluded that they had a ghost in their workshop who felt “like a family member,” ultimately giving it the nickname “Pete the Poltergeist.”

I don’t subscribe to the idea that ghosts are “spirits of the deceased” because I don’t recognize death. In the multiverse, once you are a possibility, you exist. And once you exist, you endure forever in one form or another… What we term as ghosts are lifeforms just as we are. ~ Paul F. Eno

After experiencing more of Pete’s playful antics, which included throwing and relocating objects, as well as responding to requests to produce items like money or tools, the homeowner eventually reached out to David Fontana, a Professor of Psychology at Cardiff University and a well-respected parapsychologist known for his involvement in significant paranormal studies.

During several unannounced visits, Fontana witnessed phenomena that convinced him of the poltergeist’s intelligence and purpose. On one occasion, a rock was thrown across the room as he entered, with no discernible source. He meticulously documented the investigation, noting that objects frequently appeared from nowhere or were launched with evident force, leading him to label it the “responsive” poltergeist.

One day, while laboring in the workshop, one of the men glanced up and saw the ghostly figure of a faceless little boy waving at them. Could it be that an entity from the spirit realm was trying to reach out to someone on the earthly plane with an understanding to do so? The man who witnessed it certainly thought so.

The narrative includes how this same man found himself alone in the workshop late one night and began to feel quite uneasy. He kindly requested Pete not to disturb him that night as he was quite busy. Remarkably, he did not encounter any more disturbances from the poltergeist that evening.

The case garnered significant media and public interest, not just due to the consistent activity, but also because of the plethora of witnesses. Local police officers, shop employees, and insurance adjusters alike reported witnessing items flying or hearing unexplained sounds. Fontana’s involvement lent credibility to what evolved into one of the most thoroughly documented poltergeist investigations in the UK.

Eventually, the activity lessened when Mower Services relocated to a new site, but Pete the Poltergeist allegedly followed one of the employees home and continued his playful yet unsettling behavior there.

Understanding Poltergeist Phenomena

Poltergeists represent paranormal phenomena or supernatural events characterized by unaccounted disturbances, typically tied to a specific individual or location. These disturbances generally include knocking or tapping sounds, banging noises, objects moving without cause, flooding, electrical anomalies, and even unexpected fires.

Researchers Alan Gauld and Tony Cornell conducted an evaluation of 500 poltergeist reports, discovering that the most common occurrences involved the movement of small objects (64%), rapping sounds (48%), shifting larger items like chairs and tables (36%), sightings of ghostly figures (29%), and the presence of voices or groaning sounds (26%).

The label “poltergeist” is derived from the German terms poltern, meaning to “crash” or “bang,” and geist which translates to “spirit” or “ghost.” Accounts of poltergeist activity can be traced back to at least 530 A.D., with numerous historical instances attributing such disturbances to ghosts and hauntings. A noteworthy earlier case includes a young nun called Anthoinette de Grollée in France in 1526, who experienced bizarre sounds and visions.

The uproar often seems to carry mischievous intent, thus the traditional connection with ghosts or other supernatural beings. However, in many situations, it could equally arise from a force originating from a living individual ~ Barrie Colvin

Origins Of Poltergeist Activity

Historically, poltergeists have been linked to malevolent spirits or supernatural forces, although current parapsychological theories propose that these disturbances might stem from repressed emotions, particularly in younger persons, manifesting as psychokinetic energy – a concept referred to by investigators as recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis (RSPK). It essentially stipulates that the individual, known as the “living agent,” externalizes or brings forth his or her internal, usually negative emotions.

The investigation of poltergeist phenomena presents challenges. The activity is uncommon, capricious, and often fleeting, making it tough for researchers to obtain conclusive proof. Allegations tend to be anecdotal, susceptible to bias or embellishment. Some cases of fraud have also been revealed, although numerous well-documented incidents have excluded the possibility of fraud. Skeptics argue that these events might result from hoaxes or natural phenomena like seismic activities, though this perspective is not widely embraced by serious scholars.

While public perceptions of poltergeists are significantly shaped by dramatized media portrayals in films such as The Exorcist and Poltergeist, more objective investigations frequently indicate that the evidence is far from definitive. Studies have shown that in many instances, witnesses have engaged in communication with the unseen force, often through coded knocks. Although frequently attributed to ghosts, the psychological interpretations, including RSPK, are gaining traction among researchers.

Nonetheless, certain cases do not involve a specific individual or living agent and appear to signify communication with a disembodied entity, suggesting the possibility that poltergeists could implicate forces from the afterlife. These instances challenge the presumption that all poltergeist phenomena are the result of psychological disturbances in the living.

In contemporary times, some hypotheses posit that poltergeists might be elucidated by extended physics principles, such as psi fields or zero-point energy, which could interact with the physical realm in ways that science has yet to comprehend fully. Although the evidence remains speculative, ongoing inquiries continue to examine these mysterious manifestations.

The Battersea Poltergeist

The account of Pete the Poltergeist stands as one of the most renowned instances of recorded poltergeist phenomena, but it is by no means the sole one. Other notable incidents have been documented and investigated globally. Some of the most meticulously chronicled occurrences in England include Willington, Epworth Rectory, East Midlands, and Andover.

Additionally, there is the well-known case of the Battersea Poltergeist from the 1950s, which involved peculiar and unexplainable occurrences at 63 Wycliffe Road in the Battersea neighborhood of London. The activity revolved around Shirley Hitchings, a teenage girl, along with her family. It commenced in 1956 with sudden loud noises and objects such as slippers moving autonomously, escalating over the next few years into more aggressive disturbances, including spontaneous fires.

The Battersea Poltergeist, dubbed “Donald” by the family, is regarded as one of the most thoroughly documented and enigmatic poltergeist cases in Britain. The incidents captured the attention of investigators and the media, particularly paranormal researcher Harold Chibbett. Despite extensive inquiry, the origins of the events were never conclusively determined, leaving the case unresolved. The activity persisted for 12 years, becoming so infamous that it was even brought up in the British Parliament. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in the story featured in a popular BBC Radio 4 series, The Battersea Poltergeist, which delved deeply into the case.

Regardless of its origin, a belief in spirits seems to have been prevalent among all ancient civilizations that have left us any record of themselves. Ghosts began to manifest early in human history, and continue to do so today, despite the incessant proclamations that “we’ve resolved these matters” ~ James Russell Lowell

The Enfield Poltergeist

Another notable poltergeist case is the Enfield Poltergeist occurring in London. In 1977, the Hodgson family began experiencing poltergeist phenomena. It focused around two young sisters, Janet and Margaret, who faced bizarre disturbances at home, such as furniture moving, knocking sounds, disembodied voices, and even human levitation! Eleven-year-old Janet was physically lifted and set down in different locations at various times.

The case attracted significant media attention and involved paranormal experts, including Ed and Lorraine Warren, the renowned investigators whose lives inspired the popular Conjuring horror film series. The activity continued for approximately 18 months, during which journalists, neighbors, and paranormal experts reported witnessing heavy furniture moving unaided, hearing a rough voice, incessant tapping sounds, and Janet levitating several feet above the ground.

Poltergeist phenomena remain a subject of fascination and discussion. While some regard them as evidence of ghosts or supernatural entities, others suggest psychological or environmental explanations. Regardless of the perspective, these phenomena confront our understanding of reality, human perception, and the invisible.

These occurrences pose significant questions regarding the boundaries of science, the essence of consciousness, metaphysics, and the influence of belief. Poltergeists serve as a reminder that much of our existence remains enigmatic and unexplained, compelling even the most doubtful among us to reevaluate the broader implications of what we consider real and possible.

Comprehending the Enigmatic Nature of Poltergeist Phenomena

Poltergeist phenomena have intrigued and puzzled individuals for centuries. These mysterious events, characterized by unaccountable noises, objects that move or are thrown, and even physical confrontations, have been reported across various cultures and throughout history. Despite countless investigations and advancements in science, the enigmatic essence of poltergeist occurrences continues to elude explanation.

The term “poltergeist” stems from the German words “poltern” (to create noise) and “geist” (spirit). Unlike conventional ghostly manifestations, poltergeist activity is not linked to a specific spirit or entity. Instead, it is thought to be a representation of psychokinetic energy, often ascribed to an individual, typically an adolescent or young adult, referred to as the “agent.”

One of the most engrossing facets of poltergeist activity is the capacity to influence physical objects. Witnesses have recounted instances of furniture being shifted or upended, doors slamming shut, and objects being hurled across the room. These incidents often occur spontaneously and without any recognizable cause, leaving investigators confounded.

Psychologists and parapsychologists have proposed a variety of theories to elucidate the origin of this psychokinetic energy. Some postulate that the agent may unknowingly harbor telekinetic abilities, the capability to move objects with the mind. Others believe that the energy arises from repressed emotions or psychological stress, which find an avenue through the poltergeist phenomena.

Another puzzling feature of poltergeist phenomena is the capacity to produce unexplainable noises. Observers frequently describe hearing footsteps, knocking sounds, or even voices, despite the absence of any visible source. These auditory phenomena can be especially disconcerting as they defy logical explanations and challenge our comprehension of the physical realm.

Skeptics contend that several poltergeist reports can be linked to natural causes or psychological factors. They argue that creaky floorboards, drafts, or even practical jokes may explain some of the experiences reported. Additionally, skeptics maintain that the power of suggestion and the human predisposition to discern patterns and meanings in random occurrences can fuel belief in poltergeist phenomena.

Nonetheless, there are instances that resist rational clarification. Numerous well-documented cases have occurred in the presence of multiple witnesses, complicating any dismissal of them as mere illusions or trickery. In certain occasions, poltergeist activity has been recorded by investigators utilizing scientific instruments, capturing unexplained variations in temperature, electromagnetic fields, or the emergence of anomalous substances.

Despite the ongoing debate and absence of conclusive proof, researchers persist in examining poltergeist phenomena in their efforts to solve their mysteries. Parapsychologists conduct experiments to explore the potential psychokinetic capabilities of individuals and scrutinize the psychological elements that may act as triggers for poltergeist occurrences. They also assess environmental conditions and the emotional state of the agent to identify possible correlations.

Recently, advancements in technology have enabled more sophisticated investigations. Researchers now employ thermal imaging, motion detectors, and electromagnetic field sensors to collect data and assess the physical dimensions of poltergeist phenomena. Yet, these instruments have yet to yield definitive answers, preserving the enigmatic essence of poltergeist activity.

In summary, the enigmatic nature of poltergeist occurrences continues to engage our curiosity and provoke us to rethink our understanding of the universe. Regardless of centuries of studies and scientific developments, these puzzling events remain evasive and defy straightforward explanations. While skeptics advocate for natural or psychological causes, well-documented instances and unaccounted physical manifestations imply that poltergeist phenomena may encompass more than meets the eye. As researchers persist in their exploration of this enigma, we can only wish for the day when we unravel the mysteries surrounding these perplexing and captivating events. Continue reading
