Recently, I had the chance to connect with a group of elderly individuals, and one question I posed was, “If you could turn back time and start afresh, what would you alter?”

Much to my astonishment, their primary regret was the desire for greater authenticity in their lives, yearning to have lived on their own terms instead of meeting others’ expectations. One woman expressed that she recognizes she should have pursued the path her soul originally intended rather than conforming to societal pressures.

Another woman recounted the devastation she felt when a beloved partner unexpectedly left her for another. That pivotal moment prompted her to realize how much time she had squandered by sidelining her aspirations to cater to someone else’s needs. If given the chance to rewind, she would have approached that relationship differently, perhaps avoiding it entirely! “Never live for someone else, that’s the lesson I’ve learned,” she stated.

Some of the regrets shared were profound and weighed heavily. A few acknowledged that too much time has elapsed, making it impossible to reverse past decisions. They recognized that numerous joys and chances for personal and spiritual enrichment are now permanently lost. A gentleman added that, while the adage “it’s never too late” contains wisdom, there are practical truths about aging and “missed opportunities” in certain aspects of life.

This encounter reminded me of how many clients have created their entire lives in service of another person or have attempted to become what someone else believes they should be.
