I have always been enthralled by chilling ghost tales. In fact, the more terrifying they are, the better! Since my adolescent years, I have actively sought out sensational supernatural narratives purely for the excitement they bring.

A particular tale that lingers in my thoughts is that of “Pete the Poltergeist.”

During the 1980s, while Britain faced a recession, two self-employed individuals in Cardiff successfully operated a lawnmower repair service known as Mower Services from one of their residences.

On one occasion, one of the men heard noises resembling stones being tossed at the workshop door, but found no one outside when he went to check. The stones appeared to come from thin air!

Subsequently, the men discovered that their keys had been misplaced, and a peculiar odor permeated a specific area of the workshop that had suddenly turned very cold. They even began to find money and witnessed objects hurled across the workshop floor – perplexed about the source and the cause!

Due to this inexplicable activity, they decided to close the shop one night to conduct their own séance-like experiment. They rested their hands on a table, fingers touching, and requested the spirit to throw a stone at them – and it complied! Then one of the men asked for a pen, which was tossed at them too!

What caused this? The two men simply concluded that they had a ghost in their workshop who felt “like a family member,” ultimately giving it the nickname “Pete the Poltergeist.”

After experiencing more of Pete’s playful antics, which included throwing and relocating objects, as well as responding to requests to produce items like money or tools, the homeowner eventually reached out to David Fontana, a Professor of Psychology at Cardiff University and a well-respected parapsychologist known for his involvement in significant paranormal studies.

During several unannounced visits, Fontana witnessed phenomena that convinced him of the poltergeist’s intelligence and purpose. On one occasion, a rock was thrown across the room as he entered, with no discernible source. He meticulously documented the investigation, noting that objects frequently appeared from nowhere or were launched with evident force, leading him to label it the “responsive” poltergeist.

One day, while laboring in the workshop, one of the men glanced up and saw the ghostly figure of a faceless little boy waving at them. Could it be that an entity from the spirit realm was trying to reach out to someone on the earthly plane with an understanding to do so? The man who witnessed it certainly thought so.

The narrative includes how this same man found himself alone in the workshop late one night and began to feel quite uneasy. He kindly requested Pete not to disturb him that night as he was quite busy. Remarkably, he did not encounter any more disturbances from the poltergeist that evening.

The case garnered significant media and public interest, not just due to the consistent activity, but also because of the plethora of witnesses. Local police officers, shop employees, and insurance adjusters alike reported witnessing items flying or hearing unexplained sounds. Fontana’s involvement lent credibility to what evolved into one of the most thoroughly documented poltergeist investigations in the UK.

Eventually, the activity lessened when Mower Services relocated to a new site, but Pete the Poltergeist allegedly followed one of the employees home and continued his playful yet unsettling behavior there.

The activity continued for approximately 18 months, during which journalists, neighbors, and paranormal experts reported witnessing heavy furniture moving unaided, hearing a rough voice, incessant tapping sounds, and Janet levitating several feet above the ground.
